The plumage colour of a bird is important for a variety of reasons. Birders commonly use colour and markings to identify a bird, and birds have great colour vision, which aids in the selection of a mate or the repelling of an invader.

Brighter plumage frequently indicates strength and good health, and many birds undergo annual moults to freshen their colours before the mating season in the hopes of attracting the most attractive mate.

Red is one of the most brilliant and visible colours of all, and there are many gorgeous red birds all around the world.

The species featured here are the world’s reddest and brightest birds, and each one would brighten up any birder’s life list.

    Common Redpoll

Frequent Redpolls are not very common red birds in Florida, so spotting one is a real treat. In the last ten years, they’ve only been seen once in Florida.

If you want to view common Redpolls, you’ll have to travel north. Reddish-browed Common Redpolls have rosy breasts and are brown and white on the rest of their bodies.

They are more common in northern regions during the winter and less so in central states.

They can be found in weedy areas or on tree catkins, but they will also come to feeders for tiny seeds like nyjer seeds or thistle.

    Scarlet Tanager

During migration in Florida from April to mid-May, as well as in September and October, these vivid red birds can be seen. In the summer, they reproduce in eastern woodlands before travelling to South America.

Scarlet Tanagers have vivid red plumage, black wings, and black tails. Females have darker wings and tails than males.

Because they like to stay high in the forest canopy, Scarlet Tanagers might be difficult to notice.

Plant berry plants including blackberries, raspberries, huckleberries, juneberries, serviceberries, mulberries, strawberries, and chokeberries to attract more Scarlet Tanagers.

    Vermilion Flycatcher

Vermilion Flycatchers are not extremely frequent red birds in Florida, however, they can be seen between mid-October and March throughout the winter.

They can be found all year in the extreme south, collecting insects or sitting on exposed perches in arid environments.

The rear part of the Vermilion Flycatcher is brown while the front is brilliant red. with a dark mask covering their face Females have a light reddish belly and are grey and brown in colour.

They’re very widespread in the southwest, but they’re also seen in lower quantities on the Gulf Coast.

    Northern Cardinal

    northern cardinal

Throughout the year, Northern Cardinals are a frequent red bird in Florida. Northern Cardinals are distributed in eastern and southern states, and during the breeding season, they would occasionally fight their own reflection to protect their territories.

The male Northern Cardinal has a vivid redhead, body, and tail, as well as black around his face. They’re breathtaking, especially against a snowy winter backdrop.

With their brown colouration, pointed brown crest, red accents, and red beaks, the females are likewise a bit spectacular.

If you want to attract Northern Cardinals to backyard feeders then feed them sunflower seeds, peanut hearts, millet, and milo. You can use large tube feeders, hoppers, platform feeders, and food thrown on the ground.

    Summer Tanager

Summer Tanagers can be seen throughout the year in Florida, although they are more abundant during migration between April and September.

Before wintering in Central and South America, they breed throughout the southern and eastern United States.

Male Summer Tanagers are brilliant red, while females are yellow. Forest songbirds that feed on bees and wasps in mid-flight can be found in open forests. They capture and squash them and then devour them.

If you want to attract Summer Tanagers to your yard then grow berry plants and fruit trees in your yard.

    Red-Headed Woodpecker

Red-headed Woodpeckers are vividly coloured birds with red, black, and white feathers on their bodies. Their heads and necks have a deep crimson colour, with black upperparts and white underparts. Their bills are grey and modest in length.

The open rural regions of temperate North America, southern Canada, and the east-central United States are home to Red-headed Woodpeckers.

These birds frequently catch flying insects and store all the nuts and berries they can find in their nests throughout the day.

    House Finch

The House Finch is a common red bird that may be found all year in Florida. It was originally exclusively found in western states, but it was brought to eastern states and has thrived, even displacing the Purple Finch.

The male House Finch has a red head and breast, while the females have a brown-streaked hue.

House Finch can be found in parks, farms, woodland margins, and backyard feeders. They gather in large numbers that are difficult to overlook.

Black oil sunflower seeds or nyjer seeds in tube feeders or platform feeders can attract more House Finches to backyard feeders.
